Safe Human Foods Dogs Enjoy!

Does Your Furry Friend Occasionally Enjoy These Human Treats?

Just like humans, each dog is an individual, and may require a different diet for a long healthy life. It is best to ask your vet to recommend a quality dog food. When taking your dog to a dog sitter it is best to bring your dog’s food to prevent having any changes in their diet.Well-designed dog food, gives your pet all the nutrients needed for an active, healthy life. However, you can occasionally offer your dog human food as a special treat. Just remember it is a TREAT, and should be portioned accordingly. Make sure the treat you are sharing is not from the Dangerous Foods for Dogs list, is well cooked, pure, and not fatty nor heavily seasoned.  The following list from WebMD outlines some human foods that your dog may enjoy sharing with you as a treat. Which of these foods does your dog like best?

Safe Human Dog Treats

  1. Safe: Lean Meats: Most dogs are fine eating thoroughly cooked, lean cuts of meat. Be careful to remove all visible fat - including skin on poultry. Also be sure there are no bones in the meat before you give it to your dog.
  2. Safe: Some Fresh Fruits Slices of apples, oranges, bananas, and watermelon make tasty treats for your dog. Remove any seeds first, though; seeds, stems, and leaves can cause serious problems.
  3. Safe: Some Vegetables Raw carrot sticks, green beans, cucumber slices, or zucchini slices make a healthy occasional snack for your dog. Even a plain baked potato is OK. Never let your dog eat any raw potatoes, or potato plants in your garden.
  4. Safe: Cooked White Rice and Pasta Your dog may enjoy plain cooked white rice or pasta. If your pooch has an upset tummy, a serving of plain white rice with boiled chicken can be easily digested.
If you would like to prepare foods yourself, to feed your dog, rather than purchasing a prepared dog food, talk to your vet about amounts and frequency. Resources: WebMD.com Dangerous Foods for Dogs
